The tour explores the architectural history of a 101-year-old building that has undergone three incarnations. Designed by architect Moshe Cherner and erected in 1925 as a luxury hotel, the building later served as City Hall before becoming the Tel Aviv-Yafo City Museum. Its prominent position atop the hill at the heart of the city’s cultural and commercial center influenced its design and distinctive Neo-Classical style. From the Mayor’s circular balcony, participants will view Bialik Square, where examples of 1920s Eclectic Eretz-Israeli architecture stand alongside the International Style Bauhaus buildings that characterize Tel Aviv of the 1930s. The tour also traces the building’s restoration and preservation in 2009, during Tel Aviv’s centennial year, and examines the founding of the museum as a home for all the city’s residents. A highlight is the recently completed renovation of the Mayor’s office, including a rare copy of the Book of Tel Aviv, edited by Alter Druyanov, which chronicles the early days of little Tel Aviv.
