אירוע הוקרה לפיל פרידמן ואב פטריק דבואה

An international workshop marks the opening of the Patrick Desbois and Philip Friedman Institute at Yad Vashem, dedicated to documenting Holocaust murder sites beyond the extermination camps. The program focuses on the Holocaust in Eastern Europe and Holocaust historiography.

The opening remarks feature Dani Dayan, Philip Friedman, Father Patrick Desbois and David Silberklang. A conversation on the Yad Vashem Archives explores its collections, research and the stories of Holocaust victims, with Haim Gertner as moderator and Iael Nidam Orvieto and Yoel Finkelman as participants.

Christoph Dieckmann delivers the keynote lecture, “The Holocaust in Eastern Europe: Testimonies, Historiography, Documents.” An educational panel, “In the Absence of Survivors: Reflections about Teaching the Final Solution in Eastern Europe through Personal Voices,” considers approaches to teaching the subject. Moderated by Noa Mkayton, the panel includes Shlomit Steiner-Dunkelblum on Gustawa Jarecka’s “We Utter a Cry” and teaching the language of the murdered Jewish people; Mali Eisenberg on the educational use and experience of the installation “Among the Trees—The Holocaust in the Soviet Union, 1941–1945”; and Renata Masna on teaching the Holocaust in Eastern Europe through eyewitness accounts.

The program concludes with a dedication ceremony for the institute.
